Advantages of UV ink in label printing

The types of inks traditionally used to print labels are water-based, solvent-based or UV-based.
The cost of UV inks is on average 2-2.5 times higher than the price of traditional inks (solvent-based), but the price is significantly compensated by its lower consumption (savings of up to 50%) and ease of use when printing labels.
The advantages of UV ink are obvious:
• Stable performance during label printing due to constant viscosity;
• Minimal consumption (no solvent evaporates when printing labels);
• Stable reproduction of high raster lines, refinement of highlights and shadows in labels;
• Color accuracy when printing labels;
• Ink solidifies quickly when printing labels;
• Eliminates drying of printed parts when printing labels (no exposure to UV radiation);
• Excellent adhesion to various film materials when printing labels;
• When printing labels, the print is highly resistant to light, chemical and mechanical influences;
• Easy to handle and virtually waste-free - no need to constantly add additives to its ingredients.
There are two types of photopolymerization reactions that cause UV ink to cure during the label printing process: free radical reactions and cationic reactions. Relatively cheap free radical curing inks are widely used for label printing, but cationic inks have no residual odor and are suitable for food contact, making these inks the most suitable solution for printing labels to meet the increasing hygiene requirements of these labels.
